Having a bonsai tree is like having a sculptured piece of artwork as well as having a plant to care for. My first bonsai tree was already sculptured for me all I had to do was take care of it. It was doing fine in the house by a window with my other plants. One day my husband took it outside in full sun and misted it. All the leaves on my bonsai got scorched and burnt and fell off. So I was left with just the pot and a leafless tree. I told my husband that was just like when the garden gets frosted and the sun comes up and scorches and burns the plants leaves. He did not believe me that he was what killed my bonsai. I brought it back in the horse and my bonsai sat there for a while and slowly started getting some leaves back on it. I was thrilled that my bonsai was still alive after such an assault. He still didn't believe that his actions are what damaged my bonsai in the first place and took it back outside in the full sun and misted it again to prove to me that isn't what caused the damage. I still have the pot but without a live and growing bonsai.

Spider mites, aphids, scale and mealy bug can cause damage to your bonsai trees. They can make it look like it is turning yellow or brown. One great way to get rid of these pests is to mix a teaspoon of dish detergent with 8 ozs of water and spray it on your bonsai. Leave the suds mixture dry on your tree for an hour and then rinse off with a clear water spray. The oil in the suds will kill these tiny pests. They lay eggs that will hatch and re-infect your tree, so the process should be repeated a few more times once a week. Never spray your tree while it is direct sunlight as this can burn the leaves. Bonsai that are normally grown out doors will need about 10 hours of sunlight or light from a grow light to keep it healthy.
